Why does my child need to see a pediatric dentist?

Pediatric dentists go through additional 2 to 3 years of advanced training after dental school to specialize in treating children. They learn about the dental, medical and emotional needs specific to children and have limited their practices to exclusively treating children. Pediatric dental offices are also designed with children in mind and often have kids games and special child-sized dental equipment.

When should my Child see a dentist for the first time?

Along with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, we recommend that a child’s first dental visit be scheduled by his/her 1st birthday or within six months of their first tooth erupting. Early dental visits can help prevent complications with oral health later in life.

What Can I expect at my child’s first visit?

At your first visit, you and your child will be welcomed by our Silver Spring Pediatric Dentistry team. Your child will be able to enjoy their favorite shows and movies on TV in the exam room to help soothe any dental anxiety they may have. We will perform a gentle teeth cleaning with a thorough exam and may suggest x-rays. We will then discuss findings with you and outline a customized plan to optimize your child’s dental health.

Why are baby teeth important?

Baby teeth not only help your child chew, eat and smile, they are also important in guiding the permanent tooth into the proper position. Baby teeth that are lost prematurely can cause crowding or spacing issues that increase the likelihood of needing braces later on. Swelling, pain, redness, fever, lethargy and even life threatening emergencies can result from untreated tooth decay.
